Gastropexy

Prevent your dog from life-threatening stomach twisting with our gastropexy services.

At Genesee Valley Veterinary Hospital, we offer gastropexy services for dogs of all ages. Gastropexy is a surgical procedure sometimes performed in large and giant breed dogs to prevent gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat. GDV is a condition that occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself, cutting off the blood supply and causing severe pain, shock, and death if not treated promptly. GDV is more common in deep-chested dogs, such as great Danes, German shepherds, labrador retrievers, and boxers.

A gastropexy procedure involves suturing (stitching) the stomach to the abdominal wall or the diaphragm. The aim is to permanently fix the stomach in position and prevent it from twisting abnormally in the future. Gastropexy can be performed as a preventive measure in dogs at risk of GDV or as a treatment measure in dogs that have already experienced GDV.
